CF requires constant, regular monitoring qualified doctors at a Cystic Fibrosis Centre at least every 3 months. With proper medical monitoring of patients by organised treatment centres, which operate with a dedicated team surrounded by specialised doctors of various specialities (CF team) and experienced nursing staff, both the quality of life of patients can be improved, as well as their health status, prognosis and survival. The majority of patients are treated in the major centres in Athens and Thessaloniki.

The Cystic Fibrosis Unit has been operating since 1961. In 1987 it joined the NHS as an independent department.

It is the largest pediatric Cystic Fibrosis Center in Greece and monitors more than 300 children with Cystic Fibrosis.

Patients are monitored regularly with visits to the Department’s outpatient clinics every 1-3 months. A small number of children are also admitted to the hospital each month.

The Department consists of the doctors Mrs. Loukou Ioanna (Director of the Department), Mrs. Petrochilou Argyri, Mrs. Moustaki Maria, Mrs. Zarkada Ioanna.

The adult CF Unit monitors CF patients since 1997. It’s the largest Unit in Greece for the treatment and follow-up of adult patients with Cystic Fibrosis, where about 300 CF patients are monitored. The Unit is in a separate area and consists of doctors’ offices and ten single clinic rooms. With donations from the Hellenic Cystic Fibrosis Association, the rooms are equipped with TVs, small refrigerators, and stationary bikes. The head of the CF Unit is Dr Diamantea Filia, Pulmonologist.

More than 116 children with cystic fibrosis are systematically cared for, both on an outpatient and inpatient basis. The children are followed up at pre-arranged quarterly visits to a special outpatient clinic that operates every Tuesday, and are free to be admitted to the clinic if they experience a deterioration in their health. Children with permanent Pseudomonas colonisation are also regularly admitted to hospital for intravenous treatment. In many cases, the CF nurse educates the parents about home hospitalisation for these cases. Supportive physiotherapy and education is provided by the physiotherapists.

The Adult CF Centre of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki at the C. has been operating for 15 years within the Pulmonary-Tuberculosis Clinic of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and is the only monitoring centre for adult patients with CF in Northern Greece and one of the two organised adult centres in Greece.

More than 60 adult patients with CF from all over Northern Greece, from Evros to Epirus, are currently being monitored at this centre. The number of patients at the Centre is increasing significantly every year, as more than 30 adult patients are gradually transferred to the Centre from the Paediatric CF Units of Papageorgiou and Hippokratheion in Thessaloniki. The head of the centre is Mrs Katerina Manika, Deputy Professor of Pulmonology.

Approximately 30 patients with Cystic Fibrosis are being monitored by the responsible physician Mrs. Maria Fotoulaki, Professor of Pediatric Gastroenterology, AUTH, in collaboration with the Cystic Fibrosis departments of Hippokrateio and Papanikolaou hospitals in Thessaloniki.

Since 2013, the Cystic Fibrosis clinic has monitored ten children under the supervision of Konstantinos Douros, Pediatric Pulmonologist – Pediatric Allergist, Associate Professor of Pediatrics.

9 children with CF are monitored at the outpatient clinic by the doctor in charge, Mr. Bolis Konstantinos, Director of ESY Pediatrics.

11 adult patients are seen in the outpatient Cystic Fibrosis clinic every Thursday by the doctor in charge, Mr. Pitsidianakis Georgios, Director of the NHS Pulmonology. A number of children with CF are also monitored by the doctor in charge, Mr Paraskakis Emmanuel.

The CF Clinic is officially operating at the University Hospital of Larissa from November 2022, every 1st and 3rd Monday of the month, with the responsible doctors Mrs. Karetsi Eleni and Mrs. Perlepe Garyfallia-Irini. 8 patients will be monitored in the clinic.
