2024 was a landmark year for Greece with historically high rates of organ donation and transplants, according to the annual Report on Transplantation Activity, published by the Hellenic Transplantation Organisation (HTO).
Specifically, based on the 2024 EOM Report:
- 111 deceased donors gave life to 236 people
- 125 living donors (123 kidney and 2 liver) offered hope
- a total of 361 patients benefited from a transplant
Lung transplants
Of particular importance for patients with lung diseases, including patients with Cystic Fibrosis, is the fact that 13 lung transplants (including one combined heart-lung transplant ) were performed in 2024. This number is an optimistic step for Cystic Fibrosis patients, for whom lung transplantation is the only life-saving option in the final stages of the disease.
Equally important is that the survival rate of lung transplants in the first year after transplantation in Greece reached 92%, exceeding the international average of 80.7%.
For patients with Cystic Fibrosis and other lung diseases, who are often on the waiting list for lung transplantation, these data offer substantial hope for the future.
This progress fills us with hope and responsibility. As the Panhellenic Cystic Fibrosis Association, we continue our close cooperation with all relevant bodies, with the aim that every patient has access to a second chance at life and to appropriate care and follow-up after transplantation.
